Supernatural - Season 4 - Episode 18: The Monster At the End of This Book
2009-Apr-04, Saturday 09:49 pmI am so... terrible. I can't even bring myself to write decent journal entries... /sigh. oh well. I've been in a 'meh' mood lately...so...not much worth describing.
But! I will go ahead and give my thoughts on the last Supernatural episode (yes, I've been in such a funk, I haven't watched Thursday's episode till Saturday =..= I suck. Bad, Fan-girl, bad.)
OK!
First off, I was really excited about this episode. I know it doesn't seem that way, since it took me two days to watch it and all, but I was. The idea of someone being able to see the brother's lives, and how they could possibly do this, and the connection it may imply... well, it was just intriguing. I missed that there weren't many classic rock songs playing in this episode...but at least we learned that Dean's tied two favorite songs are Ramblin' On and Traveling Riverside Blues :) Oh, and great reference to Styx there, Dean. Agents DeYoung and Shaw? :3 What a hoot. God, but I want to hear Lady now...
The idea of the brothers being written about and not knowing, and the person writing would see all their lives in detail...that was awesome to start with...but somehow... It began to feel sorta Mary Sue-ish (or Gary Stu depending on which way you swing it :3 ). The idea of the Prophet according to this season... well...it's different from what I'm used to. I mean, there are a bunch of prophets, right? Castiel even references Luke (presumably from the Bible).... but Luke was an Apostle, and all most all the apostles died pretty horrible deaths, becoming Martyrs for their causes...so...I'm not sure how the Arc Angle who protects the prophets/apostles factors in to this...Maybe once the prophet's visions and account of the visions are written, the arc angel is no longer bound to them, because they bore witness and did what they were supposed to do? ....then again, I may just be getting my show terminology mixed up with silly things like actual facts ... but who's to say? I'm really taking it too seriously, aren't I? It doesn't even say if Apostles and Prophets are the same... I'm thinking because Luke was an Apostle, the other Apostles must be prophets too....I really need to stop over-examining things :)
Anyway, it felt a bit Mary Sue-ish, if only because in pops this new character who knows the boys so well because he's all-seeing when it comes to their lives, and has mysterious power as well as an undeniable/unbreakable connection to our Winchesters. Aaand, it's not a bad thing, in fact the Angels love him... I'll be he first to admit that there are a few Mary Sues that are written well... they aren't too outlandish and the character does have considerable flaws, making them seem more human and thus decreasing the Mary Sue factor...still, it sorta made the episode feel less like an actual episode and more like a fan fic.... which, some fan fics are good... so, that's ok. And this episode was good. I'm not complaining, I'm just stating an opinion. In my opinion Bella from Twilight is very much a Mary Sue, but she's so human and real that she's a likable Mary Sue, or if not likable then at least relatable. I'm getting way off subject here =..=
I kept staring at Chuck (and giggling/squeing because I kept thinking "All Hail the Supernatural Prophet Chuck!!" lawls :D), and I kept thinking... "I love this guy. Why do I love this guy? He seems familiar..." Half way through the episode, somewhere between his beautiful eyes and his wobbly terrified voice, I recognized him. I literally yelled, "ZOMG! It's Lucas!!! O..O" That's right, strip away the beard and you've got Lucas Pegg, the optimistic worrier genius from Threshold. I barely recognized Rob Benedict with that beard o..o it was weird for me...though, I suddenly want to re-watch Threshold now >..>
/sigh.
I loved his publisher and her enthusiasm for the series. No demons are getting into her thanks to her crazy fandom :D Way to go, girl!.......anyone else think she looks familiar o..o? She looks familiar to me... as in, I keep thinking I've seen her in this show somewhere before...oh well.
Funny how Castiel caresses the books so lovingly and refers to them as gospel O..o whoa dude. Srsly.
Oddly enough, I'd say this episode was a guilty pleasure. I mean, I loved it, but if I look too closely at it I keep scratching my head and mutter '...quoi?' So...I like it, it just...sorta confuses me >..< Never thought I'd have something in common with an American Idol judge o..o
Oh well. This is probably one of those episodes I'll watch and re-watch and enjoy once I get over the pre-set rules in my own head (mostly concerning prophets o..O).
I'll try to work up the enthusiasm to actually post something later. For now, I'm out, Sunshines.
