Fact of the Day: elevator and escalators
An elevator is a car that moves in a vertical shaft to carry passengers or freight between the levels of a multi-story building. The passenger elevator was introduced in 1853. An escalator is a moving staircase used as transportation between floors or levels in subways, buildings, and other places where there are many pedestrians.
