Photography Club

So today was a pretty awesome day for me. Two very positive things happened and they both pertained to my skill in taking pictures :) But I”m getting ahead of myself.
Great things that happened…well… Photography class was great. Algebra was canceled. I got my algebra homework done and submitted with a minute to spare. But most importantly, Photography Class turned into Photography Club.

I always assumed that there was a photography club, but I don’t ever remember hearing it mentioned. Turns out the teacher along with one of her long-time friends and a fellow classmate of mine runs the club. Or at least, she sits high enough up to invite people to join.

After photography class, I lingered behind. I had planned to go into the Algebra classroom while no class was in session and finish up my homework. But when I learned that Algebra was canceled, I went to head home. Luckily, I noticed that a few of my fellow students were still in the class, so I went inside. One of the ladies asked to see my photos, so I laid them all out on the table. I’m always fairly eager for a critique because I tend to look over what’s good and see only what’s wrong with a shot. She really loved my pictures and after looking at them she asked if I’d be interested in joining the photography club. She took my e-mail address and gave me her card, writing down all the information about the next meeting. I was so jazzed. I could barely contain my excitement. Of course, I had to because I still had algebra homework to turn in.

That was interesting. The lesson we were going over wasn’t foreign by any means, but I hadn’t looked at a lick of homework since just before spring break :| From what I understand, that’s common. Anyway, down to the wire and I ended up making a 100%, so I suppose the struggle really paid off. But the homework was due at 2pm, and when I hit the save button, I looked up to find I had submitted it at 1:59pm :3 I did one of those “In your face!” chants to the clock. It was so silly.

Anyway. The photography club thing for this next meeting is either “Telling a Story” so a picture that tells a story, or “The Best of Orange” so…uh…something with orange. So, I went through my photos and uploaded the best I could find to Walgreen’s. I had gotten a 40% off code via e-mail so I decided to indulge and upload my sushi pictures and print them out too :3 I’m honestly thinking about putting those on the wall in my kitchen… just for fun. As always, I ended up printing quite a few pictures… which is somewhat neurotic since I’ll only be submitting one…but I like all of them, so it’s not like I’ll throw them away or anything. So in my mind, it’s not like it’s going to waste.

Anyway, the website said that the order would be ready at 7:23, which I thought was weird since I ordered them at 4, but what’evs right?. I bided my time. I decided to go by Taco Bell around 5:45… I dunno why I went early. I suppose I assumed it wouldn’t take too long to print them, and plus the drive through at Taco Bell can take a while anyway. So, I went. I picked up 2 of those crunchy beef burritos (because they taste awesome and they’re so cheap), and I went to Walgreen’s (which is right next door).

When I got there, no one was at the photography counter, so I walked over to the main cashier by the door and asked if anyone was there for photo pick ups. She said, yes. It was her. So as we were walking back to the photo area she asked what name the photos were under and I told her my name. She had been looking straight ahead while she walked, but when I said my name her eyes got big and she lit up. She said, “Oh those pictures came out great! They were so good!” …and I was shocked. I mean, it’s obvious that the people who print and cut the photos are going to see them. But I had printed out hundreds, and no one had every noticed them. I was shocked and befuddled by the praise. All I could do was humbly say “Oh … thank you.”

She continued to go on about the ones she liked, how the cat picture came out so vivid, and the autumn shots were beautiful. I continued to smile and thank her for her opinion. She asked me if I was in the photography class, and I said that I was. She smiled and said that some of my class mates had been in earlier, and she had told them about my photos and how amazing they were.

o..o oh…really… huh. That’s …nice.

I then said that the class wasn’t really in competition, but I thanked her anyway, and she said, “Well, I bragged on you anyway!” which I found… strange. It’s a foreign concept, someone so removed from my life appreciating my photos. I understand that they’re decent pictures too, but I guess I assume that since I was there taking them, in the moment, understanding what it was I was trying to capture, that I’m biased.

I got in my car feeling… really pleased. I’ve thought before about giving Photography a shot as an active hobby, but I always assumed that I had more luck than skill. It’s why I was so jazzed about joining the photography club. Photographers learn so much from each other, I was so excited to have the opportunity. And maybe I’m giving it more than it’s due, but either way…. I’m so stoked :3

Now…I have a burrito to eat and some poetry to read. So I’ll write later :)
