An Ode to Chickadee

Hey Minna. The title is due to a story my dad told me the other day and told over and over to my friends today. Today was a normal church day only it was more fun towards the ends 'cause I got to hang out not only with Reiko but with my old friend Misty too. It was loads of fun.

But anyway this is about Chickadee. In my dad's own words. The following is a story my dad told me, I'm not glorifying it in any way. So here's how the story goes.

"Did I ever tell you about my pet chicken, Chickadee?...Oh she was a great chicken. My mother got my older brother a dog named Butch...but we were poor...and she couldn't afford two dogs...so she got me a chicken, named Chickadee. She gave my older brother leash for his dog, but all I got was a little string to walk my chicken."

"I didn't like it much at first but you know...I began to like that chicken. Yup, we went everywhere and did everything together, me and my Chickadee. We even bathed together. And she slept right on my chest, 'cause you know we slept four to a bed, and there was no room. And Butch always slept at the foot of the bed, and it just wasn't fair for poor Chickadee to sleep on the floor. After a while, my older brother started getting jealous of my chicken. 'Cause my chicken would lay me two eggs a day...that stupid 'ol dog never could lay the first one. *sighs* yeah that was my Chickadee."

"But you know one day...I came home from school and I started looking for my Chickadee. I looked everywhere for her and it was the darnedest thing 'cause you know Chickadee would always be there waitin for me when I got home...and I walked up to mother and said,

'Mother...where's my Chickadee?' and mother said,

'She's wandered off.' And I said,

'Now, Mother you know Chickadee don't wander off without me.' And mother said,

'Well I don't know, son, all I know is she's no where to be found.'

...That night we had the best chicken dinner I ever did eat...and it took mother quite a while to tell me the truth about Chickadee...ah but I'll never forget the time that 'ol Butch started barking at me all mean like, and my Chickadee she stood her ground and pecked that 'ol dog right in the eye! Yup...that was my Chickadee."

And that's the story of Chickadee, the finest pet chicken there ever will be...in our family at least.

I suppose that's all for now. I'm tired and I'll write later. That's all she wrote.
